Croatia captain Darijo Srna leaves Euro 2016 camp to attend father's funeral

Darijo Srna has left the Croatia squad's Euro 2016 base following the death of his father, the Croatian Football Association (HNS) has confirmed.

Uzeir Srna passed away on Sunday, soon after playing the full 90 minutes of Sunday's 1-0 win over Turkey in Paris as they got their Group D campaign underway.

Shakhtar Donetsk right-back Srna travelled back to his hometown of Metkovic in Croatia accompanied by HNS officials for Monday's funeral.

The HNS said in a statement that it "extends its deepest and most sincere condolences to our captain and his family," without giving a timescale for the 34-year-old's return.

HNS spokesman Tomislav Pacak told The Associated Press on Monday: "We'll see when exactly will he join the team again."

The rest of the squad posted a message on of support on the HNS' official Instagram account which said: "Dear Captain, we are with you and your family."

Croatia play Czech Republic in Saint-Etienne on Friday before facing defending champions Spain in their final group-stage match in Bordeaux on June 21.
