Roma twice came from behind to snatch a point with a 2-2 draw against Sassuolo in an entertaining match at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday.

Giallorosso captain Francesco Totti cancelled out Gregoire Defrel's opener in the 36th minute.

After Mateo Politano put Sassuolo back in front in the 44th minute, Roma pulled level with a left-footed volley from Mohamed Salah four minutes after the restart.

Though neither side found a winner, both remained unbeaten this season in Serie A.

Sassuolo travelled to the Italian capital level on seven points with Roma heading into the fourth round.

Roma were without injured goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, who dislocated his finger during Wednesday's 1-1 draw with European champions Barcelona in their Champions League opener.

Morgan De Sanctis, chosen as his replacement, could do nothing to stop Sassuolo's opener in the 22nd minute.

Defrel found space just outside the area and drilled a left-footed shot towards the bottom right corner of goal to beat De Sanctis.

Roma almost equalised five minutes later when Miralem Pjanic fed Salah in the box and his left-footed effort was kept out by Sassuolo goalkeeper Andrea Consigli.

The home side's efforts paid off shortly after. Totti got past his marker and hit a right-footed diagonal shot to beat Consigli.

The visitors went back in front one minute before the interval. Antonio Floro Flores's pass found Politano in the six-yard box and he struck the ball past a helpless De Sanctis.

Roma showed more determination after the half-time interval and evened the match in the 49th minute.

Salah got behind a corner kick and his 20-yard volley beat Consigli.

With seven minutes remaining, Consigli did well to save Salah's bullet strike from outside the area as Roma surged forward for the winner but could not find it.
