Real Madrid finish with 9 players in shock loss to Celta Vigo

Real Madrid finished with nine men as they crashed to a shock 2-0 loss at home to Celta Vigo on Sunday.

Two goals from Celta substitute Williot Swedberg in the second half at the Bernabeu left Xabi Alonso's side four points behind LaLiga leaders Barcelona.

Their hopes of getting back into the game after Swedberg's superb opener after 53 minutes were hit when Fran García was dismissed following two bookings in quick succession.

Álvaro Carreras was then sent off as frustration boiled over in the closing stages and Swedberg wrapped up the points in stoppage time.

Madrid, who face Manchester City in the Champions League on Wednesday, had struggled to get into gear throughout the game.

The visitors were the first to threaten when Pablo Durán raced clear from a Bryan Zaragoza pass, but Garcia blocked his shot.

Jude Bellingham went close to giving Real the lead after 16 minutes when he got his head to an Arda Güler corner, but Ionut Radu produced a fine save.

Guler was also denied by Radu, while Raúl Asencio missed the target and Jude Bellingham had another effort blocked.

Javi Rodríguez shot wide for Celta while Antonio Rüdiger and Guler had further openings that came to nothing.

Guler had a better chance from a Kylian Mbappé lay-off, but fired wide before Vinícius Júnior forced a save from Radu after being played in by Aurélien Tchouaméni.

Duran could have given Vigo the lead before the break from a defence-splitting pass by Borja Iglesias, however, he was unable to trouble Thibaut Courtois.

Federico Valverde called Radu into action with a powerful effort early in the second period but the goalkeeper was equal to it, and Real were stunned when Celta  grabbed the lead after 53 minutes.

Zaragoza drilled a low ball into the box from the left and Swedberg reacted brilliantly to flick past Courtois with his back to goal.

Madrid's task was made even tougher just over 10 minutes later when García was shown two yellow cards in quick succession for late challenges on Sergio Carreira and Swedberg.

The hosts tried to rally, but Vinícius miscued an effort and Tchouameni blasted well over.

Mbappé thought he had scored when he raced on to a Tchouameni pass and chipped Radu, but the ball dropped on to the roof of the net.

Mbappé was given another opportunity from a free-kick, but shot straight at Radu before Rodrygo and Valverde both missed.

Carreras was given his marching orders for protesting amid a scrappy ending and Celta took advantage to seal the win from a stoppage time breakaway. Swedberg coolly applied the finishing touch as he rounded Courtois and walked the ball into the net.
