Struggling Rayo Vallecano stunned Atlético Madrid with a first victory over them in 13 years as Diego Simeone's side slipped out of the top three in LaLiga after losing 3-0 to their lowly city rivals.

Vallecano, who started the day in the relegation zone, had managed only seven wins in 41 previous league encounters and their 2013 triumph had been their only success in almost 27 years.

But the margin of victory not only equalled their record against Atlético -- who have managed just one point from three league matches -- but impacted their opponents' goal difference to drop them below Villarreal, who play Levante on Wednesday, in the table.

On Thursday, Atléti had hammered Barcelona 4-0 in the Copa del Rey semi-final first leg but after making nine changes, boss Diego Simeone saw his side humbled in the south of the capital.

Nico González had two chances to open the scoring for the visitors, missing an early opportunity from six yards and then shooting over from a tight angle.

In the 40th minute, Andrei Ratiu pulled out numerous step-overs in a weaving run to the byline before cutting the ball back for Fran Pérez to arrive late at the far post and put the hosts ahead.

They added a second on the stroke of half-time as Ilias Akhomach's cutback from a similar area was met by Isi Palazón and goalkeeper Jan Oblak could not hold onto the shot to present Óscar Valentín with a simple tap-in.
