Kylian Mbappé punished former club Monaco as Real Madrid romped to a 6-1 Champions League victory at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Mbappé spent five years at AS Monaco before leaving for Paris Saint-Germain, and said on the eve of this reunion that the Ligue 1 club had helped achieve his dream of being a professional footballer.

But there was no room for sentiment as Mbappé struck twice in the opening 26 minutes to boost Real's hopes of a top-eight finish in the league phase.

Franco Mastantuono, a Thilo Kehrer own goal, Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham completed the rout as Alvaro Arbeloa's first Champions League game turned into a stroll.

Jordan Teze grabbed a consolation goal for Monaco in the final quarter after Real were caught out attempting to play from the back.

Arbeloa's first game after succeeding Xabi Alonso had ended in embarrassment with a Copa del Rey defeat to second-tier Albacete.

But Real, who bounced back with a league win over Levante on Saturday, were ahead after five minutes when Mastantuono found Federico Valverde, who helped it on to Mbappé.

The finish from just inside the box was precise as Mbappé stroked it beyond goalkeeper Philipp Köhn and into the corner of the net.

Vinícius was just off target soon after but Ansu Fati, on loan from Barcelona, should have equalised with a stretching effort from eight yards.

Mbappé's 32nd goal of the season -- and 11th in the Champions League from six games -- arrived from a delicious sweeping move.

Eduardo Camavinga's flick found Arda Güler and his pass released Vinicius down the left.

Vinicius played the ball with the outside of his right foot into path of Mbappé, who had the simple task of side-footing home.

Mastantuono ended an impressive first period by picking out Bellingham with a cross that the England midfielder headed over.

The Argentinian wideman started the second half where he finished the first with a first Champions League goal, guiding home Vinicius' cute pass from the angle.

Kehrer then diverted Vinicius' cross past past Kohn and the Brazilian then produced an outstanding strike from 12 yards after Real had counter-attacked at speed.

Teze stepped in 18 minutes from time after Real were guilty of passing the ball foolishly in front of their own goal.

But Bellingham had the final word by rounding Kohn 10 minutes from time and lifting Real into second place in the group standings.
