Liverpool 'coins' goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux resumes Swindon loan

Swindon Town have confirmed that Liverpool goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux has resumed his loan spell at The County Ground after initially being sent back to Merseyside for trying to pay a £50 club fine in pennies.

The 21-year-old Chilean joined the League One side in August and had started every league game up until the point he was dropped for Saturday's 2-1 defeat against Colchester by manager Mark Cooper over an "internal disciplinary matter."

The Daily Mail reported that Vigouroux was fined £150 for turning up late for training -- later reduced to £50 -- but that the loanee decided to make a point of paying off his fine using several bank bags full of 1p coins.

Cooper dropped Vigouroux from the starting XI entirely and then ordered him to pay the full £150 fine in bank notes before sending him back to Liverpool, but the League One club now say that the issue has been resolved.

A statement released on Swindon Town's official website on Wednesday read: "Swindon Town can confirm that on-loan goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux's absence from the starting line-up last Saturday was as a result of an individual indiscretion.

"Vigouroux was late to a training session last week and was subsequently withdrawn from the starting XI against Colchester United. After the weekend, he was called to a meeting in Liverpool by his parent club's academy staff to explain his actions.

"Following on from this meeting, Vigouroux has now returned to SN1 and will be available for selection again by Swindon Town this weekend. Contrary to reports, his loan agreement has not been terminated.

"The club considers this disciplinary matter to have now been dealt with and would like to move on swiftly."

Cooper told BBC Wiltshire: "Lawrence is going to come back. He is very humble and very apologetic. He knows the way he behaved was wrong and he has been in the changing room after the game and apologised to the players.

"He asked them if they wanted him back and they all said yes. Lawrence is an exceptional young goalkeeper and it's important he learns from this little mis-hap and it will benefit his career going forward."

Cooper confirmed Vigouroux's attempt to pay the fine with coins, adding: "It did happen and I thought it was brilliant banter, but in the context it was the wrong way to go about it. We are giving him a second chance and I'm sure he will be grateful."

One pence pieces can only be used to pay amounts up to 20p, according to the Royal Mint.
