Valenciennes' David Le Frapper gets two-match ban for sexist ref rant

Valenciennes manager David Le Frapper must serve a two-game match day ban as a result of his sexist remarks about a female referee.

Le Frapper, 44, was widely condemned earlier this month after hitting out at Stephanie Frappart following her decision not to award his side a penalty during a Ligue 2 match against Laval.

"Apparently there's a penalty but she didn't see it or she was too far away," he said following the game. "She was doing ice-skating before... I don't know."

The Valenciennes boss apologised shortly afterwards, also saying that a female referee in a man's sport was "complicated" and that Frappart "shouldn't be in the wrong profession."

On Thursday Le Frapper appeared before a league disciplinary committee and they took a dim view of his comments.

"After hearing Mr David Le Frapper, the committee decided to punish him with a four-game ban -- with two suspended -- from the pitch, the referee's room and from all official duties," a statement from the committee said.

The ban will take effect from Dec. 1.

Reacting to Le Frapper's initial remarks, the French referees' union SAFE had condemned them as being "from another time."
