Malaga central defender Weligton has undergone arthroscopic surgery on his right knee to repair internal meniscus and cartilage damage, the club has announced.
Weligton, 37, started in the team's 2-0 defeat to Villarreal on Sept. 10 and suffered recurring pain in his knee in that game. He missed his team's next two league games.
A club statement said: "The defender had arthroscopic surgery on Wednesday afternoon at the CHIP Hospital, due to the exacerbation of the injury to his right knee for an internal and chondral meniscus injury.
"Weligton will rest over the next few hours and his availability will depend on the evolution of the injury."

The Brazilian said the surgery had gone well and tweeted: "Thanks to everyone for so much love, fortunately, the surgery was a success and I will soon be back fighting."
Weligton has been a key player for Malaga since he helped the club gain promotion to Spain's top flight in his first season at La Rosaleda stadium in 2007-08 while on loan from Swiss side Grasshopper.
He joined Malaga on a permanent basis in June 2008 and started in 30 La Liga games last season, helping the club finish eighth.
Malaga, coached by Juande Ramos, had taken two points from their opening four league games before beating Eibar 2-1 at home on Tuesday. They visit Real Betis on Friday.
