Newcastle Jets' Ronald Vargas ready to build on positive debut

Newcastle marquee star Ronald Vargas is flattered at being described as a "Rolls Royce" recruit after a dream A-League debut.

But the Venezuelan international insists the team still have plenty more under the bonnet after a thumping 5-1 derby victory away to Central Coast.

It is the most goals the Jets have scored in a match for three-and-a-half years. After finishing last season as the A-League's worst-attacking side, long-suffering supporters are daring to dream of ending their seven-year finals drought.

Vargas, 30, didn't get on the scoresheet but did enough for Fox Sports pundit Mark Bosnich to liken him to a Rolls Royce for his seemingly effortless runs through midfield.

"It's a good impression that they're comparing me like this. I just can say thanks about this comment -- it's very positive," a giggling Vargas told reporters on Thursday.

"It's a very good [car]."

But the former AEK Athens, Anderlecht and Club Brugge playmaker is convinced their five-goal haul against the Mariners is just the beginning.

"We didn't play the way we want to play," Vargas said.

"We didn't create what we are used to in training but, even like this, we get five goals.

"It was positive because we won away; the most important for us is to get the three points.

"Every week, we will get better and better."

Newcastle fans will get their first proper glimpse of Vargas when the Jets play their first home match of the season on Sunday against Perth.

Vargas said he saw parts of the Glory's 2-1 defeat to Western Sydney on television and had spotted some weaknesses but didn't want to share them before the match.

He also welcomed the prospect of being marked heavily in the A-League, saying it would allow teammates like Dimitri Petratos and Andrew Nabbout to slip under the radar.

"If they look at me, it will be even better for us because the other ones have a lot of quality," he said.

"You may separate [Lionel] Messi and Cristiano [Ronaldo]. Only these kind of players can make this big difference.

"Football is 11 players ... it's about everybody -- not only one player."
