Ex-USMNT forward Juan Agudelo selected by Toronto FC in MLS Re-Entry Draft

Former U.S. international forward Juan Agudelo was one of two players chosen in Stage 2 of the MLS Re-Entry Draft, landing with Toronto FC.

The other player selected was Seattle Sounders defender Saad Abdul-Salaam, who was snapped up by FC Cincinnati.

The Re-Entry Draft is for those players whose contract has expired or whose option was not exercised by their previous club. Both Agudelo and Abdul-Salaam fell into the latter category, and will now enter into contract negotiations with their new teams.

Agudelo, 27, spent six of the past seven seasons with the New England Revolution, having spent part of the 2013-14 campaign on loan at Dutch side FC Utrecht after signing for then Premier League side Stoke City. Work permit issues prevented Agudelo from ever suiting up for the Potters, and he eventually returned to the Revs in 2015. The Colombian-born forward scored three goals in 14 appearances during his time in the Netherlands.

Agudelo began his professional career in 2010 with the New York Red Bulls, having emerged from the club's academy. His early performances, including some appearances with the U.S. team, hinted at greater things to come. But he was plagued by a lack of consistency, and he was traded to now defunct side Chivas USA in May of 2012. He was dealt once again a year later, this time to the Revs.

During his time in MLS, Agudelo has scored 47 goals and added 24 assists in 222 league and playoff appearances.

At international level, Agudelo has scored three goals for the U.S. in 28 appearances.

Abdul-Salaam, 28, spent a solitary season with the Sounders, making 18 league appearances, though none of those occurred during Seattle's run to MLS Cup. He has also spent time on the books of Sporting Kansas City and New York City FC. During his five-year MLS career he has made a total of 89 league and playoff appearances, scoring one goal and adding 11 assists.

Cincinnati will be hoping that Abdul-Salaam can help solidify a defense that conceded a league-worst 75 goals, the most in MLS history.
