Doug McDermott became the eighth player in NCAA Division I history to surpass 3,000 career points Saturday.
The 6-foot-8 Creighton Bluejays senior, playing in his final home game, broke the 3,000 barrier with a 3-pointer in the second half against Providence that gave him 3,001.
Moments later, Creighton coach Greg McDermott, who is Doug's father, called a timeout and gave his son a hug.
McDermott entered the game with 2,966 career points and passed Oscar Robertson in the first half.
Former LSU star Pete Maravich is the all-time leading scorer in NCAA history with 3,667 points. Freeman Williams (Portland State), Lionel Simmons (La Salle), Alphonso Ford (Mississippi Valley State), Harry Kelly (Texas Southern), Keydren Clark (Saint Peter's) and Hersey Hawkins (Bradley) also eclipsed 3,000 points in their career.
McDermott has scored 19 or more points in 28 of 30 games this season and is the front-runner for National Player of the Year.
