Sources: Hampton set to hire Hoyas' Ivan Thomas as coach

Hampton is expected to hire Georgetown assistant Ivan Thomas as its next men's basketball coach, sources told ESPN on Wednesday.

Thomas has been a longtime assistant coach under Ed Cooley, first at Providence for eight seasons then this past season with the Hoyas. He played a key role in leading the Friars to five NCAA tournaments during the staff's time with the program.

Prior to joining Cooley at Providence, Thomas was a high school and grassroots coach in Virginia, most notably leading T.C. Williams High School to the state title in 2008. He also coached the successful Boo Williams AAU program for 13 years, from 2002 to 2015.

Thomas will replace Edward "Buck" Joyner Jr., who was fired Monday after 15 seasons. Joyner led the Pirates to three NCAA tournament appearances, including back-to-back trips in 2015 and 2016, while also guiding the program through two conference changes, going from the MEAC to the Big South in 2018 then to the CAA in 2022.

The program has struggled since moving to the CAA, finishing 5-13 in conference play last season and 3-15 this campaign.
