Washington Nationals designate pitcher Jeremy Guthrie for assignment

The Washington Nationals made a move in the starting rotation, designating veteran Jeremy Guthrie for assignment after a rough outing on Saturday against the Philadelphia Phillies.

In his first start since the 2015 season, the 38-year-old Guthrie allowed 10 earned runs in just two-thirds of an inning in a 17-3 loss. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Guthrie became just the fifth pitcher since 1893 to allow 10 runs and not finish the first inning.

The Nationals added reliever Matt Albers from Triple-A Syracuse to the 40-man roster and recalled him to help a beleaguered bullpen.

Albers, a non-roster invitee for the Nationals in spring training, did not allow a run in 10 games during the Grapefruit League season. The 34-year-old right-hander appeared in 88 games over the past two seasons with the Chicago White Sox and posted a 30-game scoreless streak that spanned from Aug. 5, 2015, to April 24, 2016.

Albers has a career record of 29-37 with a 4.38 ERA.
