United stars shine in fourth-straight win

NBL heavyweights Melbourne United have extended their winning streak to four games with a 109-90 victory over the Adelaide 36ers.

United guard Melo Trimble lit up Melbourne Arena with a season-high 32 points on 11-of-13 shooting, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, as last season's grand finalists continued their winning ways following a slow start to the season.

The Sixers led by 12 in the early stages but all their hard work came undone as the home side unleashed a 37-14 second-quarter onslaught to lead by 15 at halftime.

Adelaide tried valiantly to claw their way back into the match, cutting Melbourne's advantage to seven in the third term, but United steadied to close it out.

Trimble swung the game with 15 points in the pivotal second term while Chris Goulding (20, five three-pointers) and Shawn Long (16) scored crucial baskets in the second half to halt every Sixers rally.

After losing four of their first five games, United now sit at 5-4 with four of their next six contests at Melbourne Arena, starting with their third derby clash against South East Melbourne Phoenix.

Jerome Randle finished with 17 points while Anthony Drmic added 16 as the Sixers suffered a third straight loss, with a home clash against defending champions Perth Wildcats coming up on Friday.

The visitors made a promising start to the match with Randle and Ramone Moore converting a series of United turnovers and second chance opportunities into points to lead 25-13 late in the first quarter.

Strong work under the basket from Alex Pledger helped United close the term down 27-19 and his teammates lifted in the second quarter, Goulding connecting from long range to put United on top 33-31.

Trimble's scoring prowess kept United rolling while Casey Prather celebrated his return to Melbourne Arena with a three-point play to close the half with a 56-41 advantage.

After a scoreless opening half, Adelaide's Daniel Johnson fired in six quick points to reduce the margin to 10 but Trimble answered with a triple and Long's persistence around the rim ensured Melbourne held an 80-66 edge after three quarters.

Melbourne's long-range shooters stepped up early in the fourth to wrap up the win, Goulding and Barlow each nailing triples before Goulding added another on the fast break as the lead blew out to 20 points.
