Sydney Kings lose coach Weaver to NBA

Sydney Kings coach Will Weaver is leaving the NBL club for an assistant's role in the NBA.

Weaver is joining the Houston Rockets, with the Kings confirming the move on Friday.

"Weaver has notified the club that he has accepted a role as a lead assistant coach in the NBA," the Kings said in a statement.

"The Kings granted Weaver permission to travel to the US to interview and are thrilled for Will and his family."

The Texas-born 36-year-old was appointed by Sydney in March last year and steered the Kings to a NBL grand final but the series was cancelled amid the coronavirus outbreak and the Perth Wildcats declared champions.

The Kings have named assistant Adam Forde as interim coach.
