Former New Orleans Saints cornerback Patrick Robinson signed a one-year deal with the San Diego Chargers on Thursday.
Terms weren't announced but the contract is worth $2 million and includes $1.25 million guaranteed, league sources told ESPN. Robinson can earn another $1 million through playing-time incentives.
The 27-year-old Robinson's five-year career has been a roller-coaster ride, including a knee injury that wiped out his 2013 season and a series of highs and lows on the field.
Last season was no exception. The 5-foot-11, 191-pounder won the Saints' No. 2 starting cornerback job in training camp, but he was benched during a Week 2 loss at Cleveland, then later bounced back and played well as New Orleans' nickelback and part-time starter. Robinson finished the season with two interceptions and had an outstanding performance against the Steelers' Antonio Brown in a Week 13 win.
The 32nd pick in the 2010 draft out of Florida State, Robinson has flashed great speed and playmaking instincts. He has nine career interceptions. But he has battled inconsistency and admitted confidence issues. He played great as New Orleans' No. 3 corner in 2011, then struggled mightily as a full-time starter in 2012 and suffered a patellar injury in Week 2 of the 2013 season.
The Saints continued to show faith in Robinson even after he was benched. Coach Sean Payton brought Robinson into his office and shared with him a list of demoted cornerbacks who bounced back to have good careers.
