JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jacksonville Jaguars coach Urban Meyer has hired Baltimore Ravens defensive line coach Joe Cullen to be his defensive coordinator, league sources told ESPN.
This will be Cullen's second stint with the Jaguars. He was the team's defensive line coach from 2010 to '12 under coaches Jack Del Rio and Mike Mularkey. He has spent 14 seasons as an assistant in the NFL but this will be his first job as a coordinator.
Cullen, 53, has been a defensive line coach for five teams (Lions, Jaguars, Browns, Buccaneers and Ravens). During his five seasons in Baltimore, the Ravens allowed the NFL's fewest total yards (318.0) and fewest rushing yards (98.3). He will be the third Ravens defensive assistant to get a promotion this offseason.
Earlier this month, linebackers coach Mike Macdonald became the defensive coordinator at Michigan while defensive backs coach Jesse Minter is set to become the defensive coordinator at Vanderbilt.
Cullen also was part of two high-profile incidents when he was with the Lions in 2006. He was arrested for DUI and also arrested after driving through a Wendy's drive-thru naked.
He was suspended one game and fined $20,000 by the NFL and sentenced to community service and ordered to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.
