Heather Watson overcomes home hope Mathilde Johansson to reach second round

Heather Watson did just enough to see off the challenge of home hope Mathilde Johansson and progress to the French Open second round.

Consistency was lacking in a match that produced 11 breaks of serve overall, but the British No.1 held her nerve to claim a 6-4 7-5 victory on Court Two.

Watson could not have endured a worse start to her French Open bid as she was broken in her first service game, but the 23-year-old was able to hit back immediately.

Roared on by the vocal French crowd, Johansson again took the upper hand in game five, but Watson levelled in the eighth before taking the next two to claim the first set.

The second set was even more unpredictable, with neither player holding serve until game six, when Johansson took a 4-2 lead. The Frenchwoman then saw a set point go begging at 5-4, but Watson was able to cling on with a break of serve - her sixth of the match.

Buoyed by a newfound confidence - and helped by the small matter of 42 unforced errors from her opponent - Watson then earned herself two match points on Johansson's serve.

One proved to be enough for the world No.43, who booked her place in the second-round for a shot at either No.15 seed Venus Williams or Sloane Stephens.

Elsewhere, Johanna Konta's battling spirit was not enough to carry her past Denisa Allertova. The British qualifier was edged out 7-6(17) 4-6 6-2 by her Czech opponent on Court Five.
