Stan Wawrinka breezes past 'disengaged' Nick Kyrgios at Queen's

Nick Kyrgios revealed he would not "think about tennis for a week" following his straight-sets defeat to Stan Wawrinka at Queen's Club.

The 20-year-old complained that he battled against illness and fatigue as he succumbed to a 6-3 6-4 first-round loss to the French Open champion.

"I just wasn't able to settle," Kyrgios said. "He hasn't had much time on grass but obviously his confidence is high after winning the French Open. He's hitting the ball massive and pretty sweet out there.

"I almost found it difficult to get myself engaged, I didn't want to be there. I've been having enough time on court and practising OK, but I found it tough out there. I don't usually cough just because I can, but I'm obviously not feeling great.

"I've been sick for the last week. I'm probably going to stay in my house for a couple of days, sleep, play computer games, chill out, not think about tennis, turn off all the tennis channels, delete my ATP app, and I won't think about tennis for a week or so."

Wawrinka took just 49 minutes to knock out last year's Wimbledon quarter-finalist, dropping only three points behind his first serve. Also making an appearance were the lucky plaid shorts that caused such a stir during Wawrinka's French Open triumph earlier this month, despite his claim that he had retired the outfit.

The 30-year-old looked composed throughout the regulation victory and claimed to have no knowledge of his opponent's problems, even suggesting the Australian might have been bluffing in his vow to switch off.

"I think he's saying a lot of things every day," Wawrinka said. "So it's quite interesting for journalists to hear that.

"I'm sure he's not going to switch off, I'm sure he's going to be ready for Wimbledon, because if you switch off for two weeks of tennis then you have to go on and play Wimbledon, it's coming now, so you need to be ready to play well.

"So it doesn't really surprise me, because his interviews are always funny. I read before the match that he was really excited for the challenge, and then he was sick, so he's saying a lot of things, and I think it's always interesting as a player to read what he's saying and how his mind's working."

Reigning champion Grigor Dimitrov came back from a set down to defeat Sam Querrey 4-6 6-3 6-4 in a match held over from Monday.

Dimitrov was struggling on Monday as his American opponent lead by a set and break before the Bulgarian hit back to level at one set all when play was halted. Returning on Tuesday, Dimitrov started the brighter of the two and secured the break at 4-4 before serving out for the match.

In other results on Tuesday, Gilles Muller saw off the challenge of veteran Mikhail Youzhny 6-7(5) 6-4 7-6(5), while John Isner defeated fellow-American Jared Donaldson 7-6(11) 6-4.
