NEW YORK -- Ash Barty made a successful return to the site of one of the two Grand Slam tournaments she has yet to win, holding off 2010 runner-up Vera Zvonareva 6-1, 7-6 (7) on Tuesday.
Barty, the No. 1 seed on the women's side of the US Open, won Wimbledon for her second major title and now is back in New York after remaining in Australia last year when the event was played with no fans because of the coronavirus pandemic.
"I was disappointed not to be able to come and play last year, but I think playing here this year with fans makes it all the better," Barty said.
The biggest holdup for Barty against Zvonareva came early in the first set. There was a delay of more than five minutes because the Hawk-Eye Live electronic line-calling system went down when a TV camera wasn't working.
"Just needed to make sure all cameras were spot on, and just, I think, plug one back in,'' said Barty, who also won the French Open in 2019 but has never gotten past the fourth round at the US Open, "and we were all right to go.''
Bianca Andreescu remained unbeaten at the US Open, coming back from a break down in the final set to defeat 45th-ranked Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 in a match that ended at 12:45 a.m. on Wednesday.
Andreescu needed a visit from a trainer in the second set because of stomach issues, but she improved to 8-0 at a tournament she won on her debut two years ago, then missed last year because of injury.
"My food was just, like, rumbling in my stomach, and I just felt like I had to throw up," said Andreescu, a 21-year-old from Canada who is seeded No. 6. "Just super nauseous, which was super random."
Andreescu broke Golubic to end it, then leaned over and shouted "Come on!''
Now Andreescu will put her 8-0 US Open record on the line against American Lauren Davis next.
Golubic fell to 0-5 at Flushing Meadows.
No. 4 seed Karolina Pliskova, the 2016 US Open runner-up who lost to Barty in the Wimbledon final, beat American teenager Caty McNally 6-3, 6-4. Belinda Bencic, the women's Olympic gold medalist seeded 11th, beat Arantxa Rus 6-4, 6-4, and No. 17 seed Maria Sakkari topped Marta Kostyuk 6-4, 6-3.
