Emma Raducanu in 'really fit place' ahead of grass season

Emma Raducanu said she is in a "really fit place" ahead of the grass-court season having withdrawn from the recent French Open.

Raducanu, 21, was speaking Monday at a news conference ahead of the Rothesay Open in Nottingham -- the competition at which she made her WTA debut in 2021 before claiming the US Open title later that year.

"Body-wise, physical-wise, I feel really healthy. I feel really strong," Raducanu said. "I've done amazing work with my trainer over the last few months since surgery."

Raducanu underwent surgery on her wrists and ankle in May 2023, causing her to miss the entirety of last season's grass-court campaign.

"I'm in a really fit place. I think my wrists are actually in a better position than they ever were," Raducanu added.

"So there's zero doubt or apprehension whether I'm hitting the ball or designing my schedule. It's more about being proactive and not wanting to put yourself in any unnecessary situations."

Raducanu's last game came in the first round of the Madrid Open, where she was comfortably beaten by Maria Lourdes Carle, though she did propel Britain to the finals of the Billie Jean King Cup with four wins prior to that competition.

Raducanu, ranked No. 209 in the world going into Nottingham, said she has learned to appreciate her health after dealing with injury for much of her career since that breakout 2021 season.

"It's very easy for me to lose sight of where I was exactly a year ago because it is pretty much a year ago to this day, this month," she said.

"You get so caught up in your own world that you want more and more and more. But a year ago I was on a scooter scooting around and I didn't know -- there was an element of doubt.

"To be healthy and to be here, I need to cherish it."
