Atlanta Dream's Renee Montgomery retires after 11 seasons in WNBA

Atlanta Dream guard Renee Montgomery is retiring from the WNBA after 11 seasons, she announced Tuesday.

Montgomery did not play last season as she opted out to commit to social justice causes and expand her work in sports media.

Montgomery, 34, helped lead UConn to a perfect season and the national championship in 2009, and then she was drafted No. 4 overall by Minnesota. In 2010, she was traded to Connecticut and spent five seasons with the Sun.

She split the 2015 season between Seattle and Minnesota, winning the first of her two WNBA titles with the Lynx.

Montgomery spent her last two seasons with the Dream in 2018 and 2019.

"I bought a home in Georgia nine years ago and I retired as a member of the Atlanta Dream," said Montgomery, a native of West Virginia. "I've always known I wanted to be here, and now I feel intertwined in the Atlanta fabric and culture."

Montgomery finished with career averages of 9.7 points, 3.1 assists and 1.0 steals.

In other WNBA news Tuesday, the Chicago Sky obtained the No. 16 pick of the second round of the 2021 draft from the Dallas Wings for the Sky's 2022 second-round pick. Chicago has the No. 7 pick in this year's first round.
