Wooden Award Midseason Top 25 women's list announced

After winning the John R. Wooden Award the past two seasons, former Connecticut star Breanna Stewart has since moved on to the WNBA.

That means there will be a new winner for the 2016-17 season.

The Wooden Midseason Top 25 list was revealed Wednesday, and while it included three underclassmen from top-ranked and unbeaten UConn -- Napheesa Collier, Kia Nurse and Katie Lou Samuelson -- the group also featured 14 seniors.

Washington senior Kelsey Plum, the leading scorer in the nation at 30.7 points per game, was one of five players from the Pac-12, joining Cal's Kristine Anigwe, UCLA's Jordin Canada, Stanford's Erica McCall and Oregon's State's Sydney Wiese.

Plum and Wiese led their teams to the Final Four last season, as did nominee Alexis Peterson of Syracuse.

The ACC, in fact, led the way with six nominees. Joining Peterson were Notre Dame's Lindsay Allen and Brianna Turner, Louisville's Asia Durr, Duke's Rebecca Greenwell and Florida State's Leticia Romero.

Four sophomores made the list: UConn's Collier and Samuelson, who have helped the Huskies roll to a 90-game win streak, Cal's Anigwe and Louisville's Durr.

The Wooden Award was first given to a women's basketball player in 2003-04, when Duke's Alana Beard won. The award has since gone to a UConn player five times.
