ACC Freshman of the Year Kamilla Cardoso transfers to South Carolina from Syracuse

South Carolina women's basketball has added ACC Freshman of the Year Kamilla Cardoso to the roster as a transfer from Syracuse, coach Dawn Staley announced Friday.

The 6-foot-7 Cardoso averaged 13.6 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game and was ACC Co-Defender of the Year and on the league's first team last season. She is one of 12 players who entered the transfer portal from Syracuse, which fell to UConn in the NCAA tournament's second round.

"Kamilla is a perfect complement to our program," Staley said in a statement. "Coming from a traditionally rich grassroots program, her mobility, rebounding prowess and scoring ability at her size is a rarity."

Cardoso joins a stacked 2021-22 roster for South Carolina, which brings back 11 players from a team that advanced to the Final Four. Three of the returning Gamecocks are on ESPN's top 25 players for next season: No. 2 Aliyah Boston, a forward, and No. 15 Zia Cooke and No. 19 Destanni Henderson, both guards. South Carolina also is bringing in the No. 1 recruiting class of Sania Feagin, Bree Hall, Raven Johnson and Saniya Rivers.
