PBA mulling two-conference season when quarantine ends

PBA commissioner Willie Marcial said the league is leaning towards holding a one- or two-conference season once the enhanced community quarantine imposed on the entire mainland of Luzon is lifted.

Marcial shared the details Tuesday after a video conference with the league's board of governors, though he admitted they cannot make any decision with certainty after the Philippine government extended the measure to contain the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) until April 30.

"That all depends on whether or not they'll allow mass gatherings by April 30. The governors are looking at the welfare of the players, the coaches and the fans," he said in Filipino. "If the situation gets worse, we might even play just one conference. But we'll hold at least two conferences."

League officials are set to reconvene online again after the quarantine period lapses.

Marcial also said the 3x3 league will tip off once the PBA reopens, but the D-League season's fate hangs in the balance and will depend on the willingness of universities to proceed with their campaigns.

"We'll wait for the leader of these universities and see whether or not they want to continue or move the season. We'll only decide once we find out what their decisions will be," he explained.

In the meantime, Marcial said the PBA will continue supporting its employees and other affected personnel amid the quarantine.

"The game day crews, referees and employees will receive the same amount that they received last month. The board of governors still supports them," the commissioner said.

Aside from that, the league is also set to donate P1-million worth of personal protective equipment (PPE) to medical frontliners.

"I'll be the point person and I'll also determine where to get the supplies. We're looking at hospitals that will really need the equipment," Marcial said.
