Making the case for Martin: UNC is looking for leadership on its defense this fall, and the Tar Heels expect to get it from Martin, who is Carolina’s top returner on defense and the leader in both tackles for loss and sacks. While quarterback Bryn Renner is the face of UNC’s offense, Martin is the headliner on defense. Martin started three games as a true freshman in 2010 and has become a mainstay on the line since then. He started all 12 games at defensive end last year and finished with 40 tackles, including 15.5 for a combined loss of 56 yards, four sacks for 32 yards, eight quarterback hurries and three pass breakups. He also had one forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
