Florida State-Ole Miss offers massive Week 1 implications for ACC

Week 1 in the ACC features three big matchups against the SEC -- each with a long list of reasons to watch and implications for the league. So, if you could only pick one as the biggest game of the opening week, which would it be?

Jared Shanker made his case for North Carolina-Georgia on Wednesday. Today, David Hale suggests it’s Florida State against Ole Miss.

Hale: Remember Florida State’s opener in 2013 against Pitt? It was a nationally televised game featuring a new starting quarterback with plenty of hype. Turned out, it was a debut for the ages for Jameis Winston, and it was the first step toward a national title for the Seminoles. It was a big stage for a rookie quarterback, but that’s nothing compared to what Deondre Francois could face against one of the SEC’s elite in Orlando, Florida.

The potential of seeing Francois take his first snaps for the Seminoles on the national stage is one big reason to love this matchup, but there are plenty of facets to this game that make it a tremendous Week 1 showdown. Former Clemson QB Chad Kelly gets a crack at an ACC foe as the top quarterback in the SEC. Two teams likely to be ranked in the preseason top 25 go toe-to-toe. The elite Florida State defense is tasked with shutting down the high-flying Hugh Freeze offense. Ole Miss gets to show just how good it can be after losing some big-name talent to the NFL.

In other words, if you’re just looking for good storylines, this game’s got ‘em.

But if you’re looking for some old-fashioned ACC-SEC bragging rights, this is the one to watch. UGA-UNC looks like it’ll be fun, but the Tar Heels aren’t exactly carrying the ACC flag as the league’s dominant force. Clemson is a legitimate national title contender, but they’re going to be expected to topple Auburn. FSU-Ole Miss, though? That’s much closer to a toss-up, and a Seminoles win over one of the SEC West’s top programs would put the ACC in excellent position to do some crowing the rest of the year.
