Big 12 Week 14 power rankings: Oklahoma to the playoff

Our post-conference championship game Big 12 power rankings:

1. Oklahoma (previous ranking: 1): The Sooners handled business once again -- and once again in convincing fashion -- defeating TCU 41-17 in the Big 12 championship game. The Sooners secured their spot in the College Football Playoff and will face Georgia in the semifinals.

2. TCU (2): The Horned Frogs weren't able to upend Oklahoma but still turned in a solid season at 10-3. And Gary Patterson signed another contract extension near season's end, meaning, as has been the case the past 17 years, he's not going anywhere. They'll face Stanford in the Valero Alamo Bowl.

3. Oklahoma State (3): Mike Gundy had a brief flirtation with Tennessee -- again -- but ended up staying in Stillwater. The season was solid, even if a bit disappointing given the expectations, with a 9-3 finish despite the wealth of talent they had on offense. They'll move on to face Virginia Tech in the Camping World Bowl.

4. Iowa State (4): Matt Campbell signed a new contract, and the Cyclones have a shot at more than seven wins for the first time since 2000. If they defeat Memphis in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl, it'll be a heck of an end to a good year for Iowa State.

5. Kansas State (5): The Wildcats didn't have the kind of season some expected, but they finished strong, winning four of their last five, and got some encouraging play from young quarterback Skylar Thompson to earn themselves a spot in the Cactus Bowl vs. UCLA.

6. Texas (6): The Longhorns are bowling for the first time since 2013, facing Missouri in the Academy Sports + Outdoors Texas Bowl. They'll be missing some key players (tackle Connor Williams and safety DeShon ElliottĀ have declared for the draft and said they're skipping the game), but it's a much-needed extra game for a program still trying to rebuild in its pursuit of former glory.

7. West Virginia (7): The Mountaineers had a disappointing finish, going from conference-title contention in mid-November to losing two straight and finishing 7-5. They'll try to end the year on a high note when they face Utah in the Zaxby's Heart of Dallas Bowl.

8. Texas Tech (8): A 6-6 year isn't what the Red Raiders wanted, but it is an improvement after going 5-7 a year ago. They'll face South Florida in the Birmingham Bowl, something Kliff Kingsbury hopes will be a springboard into 2018, when he'll return to try to take the program a step further.

9. Baylor (9): The Bears finished 1-11 but were competitive in most of their games. And because they played so many freshmen, there is reason for optimism in the Matt Rhule era if he can sign a solid recruiting class.

10. Kansas (10): This was a forgettable year for the Jayhawks any way you slice it. All 11 of their losses were by double digits. This team must improve in 2018.
