The Big Ten postseason player rankings roll on with No. 22. As a reminder, these rankings are based on 2011 on-field performance only, not future potential or NFL projections.
Moment of Silas, please ...
No. 22: Silas Redd, RB, Penn State, So., 5-foot-10, 209
Preseason rank: Not ranked
2011 numbers: Finished fourth in the Big Ten in rushing yards (1,241) and fourth in carries (244). His 5.1 yards-per-carry average is sixth among the league's top 10 rushers. Redd had seven rush touchdowns and added seven receptions for 40 yards.
Why he's here: Redd was the Penn State offense for much of the season, especially during the month of October, where he recorded five 100-yard rushing performances and led the FBS with 703 yards during the month. On a team that rotated quarterbacks and ranked 96th nationally in pass offense, Redd quickly became Penn State's chief offensive threat. He transformed himself from a shifty, situational-type back as a freshman to an every-down player as a sophomore.
Redd did yeoman's work, recording 28 or more carries in four of Penn State's first five Big Ten games. The workload eventually took a toll on his body and his numbers dropped late in the season, but he was extremely effective when healthy. Another offseason in Penn State's strength program -- combined with his own grueling training regimen -- should have Redd in position to challenge for first-team All-Big Ten honors and maybe more in 2012.
