No. 24: Taylor Kelly, QB, Arizona State

2012 numbers: Kelly completed 67 percent of his throws for 3,039 yards. He had 29 touchdown passes and nine interceptions. He also rushed for 516 yards and a score.

Preseason ranking: Unranked

Making the case for Kelly: As a first-year starter, Kelly, a sophomore, led a resurgent Sun Devils team that was supposed to be rebuilding in Year 1 under Todd Graham to an 8-5 finish. Kelly ranked second in the Pac-12 and ninth in the nation in passing efficiency. If not for a late UCLA field goal, in fact, the Sun Devils would have won the South Division. In that loss to the Bruins, he completed 25 of 35 passes for 315 yards with four TDs and a pick and rushed for 55 yards, so it wasn't his fault. In the blowout win against Navy in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl, he completed 17 of 19 for 268 yards with four TDs, which is darn near a perfect afternoon. Kelly put up these numbers, by the way, with a middling, starless crew of receivers, with a couple of guys who were prone to the dropsies. It shows you how deep the Pac-12 is -- and how difficult it was to make this list -- that the nation's No. 9 passer ranks 24th.
