Utah's best wins of the Kyle Whittingham era

Kyle Whittingham, in his 11th season as Utah's coach, is the Pac-12's most tenured head man. His time in Salt Lake City has featured plenty of big wins. The Utes' 62-20 humiliation of Oregon at Autzen Stadium this past Saturday conjured memories of those other successes. With this latest triumph taken into consideration, here's a look at the top five wins of Utah's Whittingham era.

1. 2009 Sugar Bowl: Utah 31, Alabama 17: To this day, this statement win resonates more loudly than any other in Utah program history. The SEC's Crimson Tide were two-score favorites over the Utes -- still in the Mountain West then -- in New Orleans, a location much closer to Tuscaloosa than Salt Lake City.

But from an emphatic opening drive all the way to the final whistle, the Utes controlled this game. Quarterback Brian Johnson's 336 passing yards and three touchdowns methodically picked Alabama apart, and Utah's BCS-busting win sent tremors through the college football world.

2. 2015: Utah 62, No. 13 Oregon 20: This sheer margin of this past Saturday's victory earned it consideration for the top spot, but we ultimately couldn't justify ranking a September game over the Sugar Bowl. But, boy, was this a shellacking. The Utes handed the Ducks their worst loss since 1977, and they did it in the hostile confines of Autzen Stadium -- where 62-20 scores are actually common, but in the home team's favor.

Disciplined defense combined with dual threat performances from two players: Both quarterback Travis Wilson and running back Devontae Booker landed punches with their arm and legs. Call it a manhandling in every sense of the term.

3. 2013: Utah 27, No. 5 Stanford 21: This game was much more tenuous than the first two, but its effect was also vital. At this point in 2013, the Utes were struggling to find their footing in the Pac-12. Adjusting to the new league proved to be tough sledding, and a bevy of painfully close losses in 2013 made the endeavor all the more frustrating.

That's why that year's one huge win was so important for Utah's program psyche. They physically shell-shocked Stanford in the first half -- the Cardinal, who went on to win the conference championship, were accustomed to being the aggressors -- before holding off a furious charge at the end. This win became a source of confidence for future success.

4. 2014: Utah 24, No. 20 USC 21: Fast forward one year. Utah progressed from the state of losing many close Pac-12 games (and winning the occasional one) to consistently stringing together victories in their new conference. This triumph over the Trojans seemed to mark that major turning point.

USC entered Salt Lake City with enviable athleticism in the backfield and on the perimeter, but the Utes let their hard-nosed brand of football dictate the tempo. They still trailed 21-17 late, but that's when Wilson made perhaps the most significant jump of his career: He led the game-winning drive with poise and precision, notching a key run to the one-yard line before throwing the winning touchdown with just seconds remaining.

5. 2008: Utah 25, Michigan 23: The Utes' spot in the aforementioned Sugar Bowl didn't come for free. The journey of that undefeated 2008 season started three months earlier in Ann Arbor, where Utah turbocharged its campaign with this win in the Big House. Johnson started his season just as he would finish it: with over 300 passing yards. The Utes led 25-10 in the fourth quarter, but they had to withstand a furious Michigan charge that died late. Utah had held on, and the most magical season of Whittingham's era -- at least so far -- was underway.
