LSU freshman Tyron Johnson joins vets in practice

BATON ROUGE -- Another LSU freshman took advantage of the opportunity to move on up on Sunday.

Sunday was the fourth and final day of split-squad practices at LSU, with mostly starters and regular contributors practicing in the morning, while reserves, walk-ons and freshmen practiced in the afternoon.

Freshman receiver Tyron Johnson joined the veterans in Sunday’s morning practice after working in the afternoon session for the first three days of camp. He joins six other members of LSU’s freshman class -- defensive backs Kevin Toliver, Donte Jackson and Xavier Lewis, defensive ends Arden Key and Isaiah Washington and offensive lineman Maea Teuhema -- who already had started practicing in the mornings.

Here is a quick video from Sunday morning’s practice, with Johnson making a diving attempt to catch a pass from quarterback Anthony Jennings (10) on the first play shown.

The Tigers will hold their first full-squad practice on Monday, but still have a few days ahead that will feature multiple practices. LSU’s practice schedule shows three days when the full team will participate in two-a-day sessions over the next 10 days.

Injury update

Sophomore defensive end Sione Teuhema also moved up to practice with the veterans on Sunday morning, possibly because junior Tashawn Bower -- a projected starter -- was not present during the practice periods that were open to the media.

Senior outside linebacker Lamar Louis (pectoral strain) practiced in a green non-contact jersey for the fourth consecutive day during the morning session. In the afternoon, freshman fullback Bry’Kiethon Mouton (undisclosed injury) also practiced in green.

Final media periods

One LSU staffer joked, “See ya in the spring!” to reporters as they left practice Sunday. That’s because, as of now, Sunday’s practices were expected to be the last that were open to reporters in any way for the rest of the season.

If that’s the case, these are the last of our preseason Instagram videos from Tigerland. Enjoy!

From Sunday’s afternoon session, here are LSU’s reserve quarterbacks working with their receivers in a passing drill. Up first is Jake Clise to freshman Jazz Ferguson (86), followed by freshman Justin McMillan to Kevin Spears (87) and Purdue transfer Danny Etling to freshman Derrick Dillon (19).
