How recruiting can help South Carolina improve at quarterback

South Carolina has positional needs across its roster, but the Gamecocks especially need to sign and develop new playmakers on offense under new head coach Will Muschamp.

Most importantly, the Gamecocks need to identify the player who can be the trigger man for their offense after injuries and inconsistency created a revolving door at quarterback last fall. Perhaps an early enrollee in South Carolina’s 2016 recruiting class can be the solution to the Gamecocks’ problems.

Biggest need: Point to any position on South Carolina’s offensive roster and the Gamecocks likely have a need. They lost Brandon Wilds and Shon Carson in the backfield and star receiver Pharoh Cooper out wide. However, quarterback is where they most desperately need to find an answer.

Former walk-on Perry Orth (1,929 passing yards, 54.8 completion percentage, 12 TDs, 9 INTs) took over for injured Connor Mitch (165 yards, 44.8 completion percentage, TD) early last season and at one point shared the job with dual-threat quarterback Lorenzo Nunez (376 yards, 61.5 completion percentage, 3 TDs, 3 INTs) before injuries also limited Nunez’s ability to play the position.

All three players are still on the roster, but nobody at South Carolina should be satisfied with what they got from the position last season. Recruiting scoop: While Orth did a decent job of filling in for Mitch, the Gamecocks have desperately been searching for a big-time quarterback to run the offense for Muschamp.

ESPN 300 quarterback McIlwain, a Pennsylvania native, committed to South Carolina more than a year ago and stayed firm in his pledge to the Gamecocks despite a push from in-state Penn State and a coaching change at South Carolina. McIlwain, a talented baseball prospect, also decided to forgo the MLB draft and enroll early at South Carolina so he can participate in spring football.

The Gamecocks also need receiver help with Cooper gone. South Carolina has picked up three wide receiver commits since Muschamp took over including four-star prospect Bryan Edwards, who also enrolled early and will go through spring practices with McIlwain. -- Derek Tyson
