ESPN's coverage of the joint practice between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Jacksonville Jaguars got us to wondering about the state of football in Florida, both in the NFL and at the collegiate level.

State of the NFL

Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins have missed the playoffs seven consecutive seasons. They've made one playoff appearance in the last 14 seasons and have no playoff wins since the 2000 wild-card game against the Colts.

Buccaneers

The Buccaneers have missed the playoffs eight consecutive seasons. They've finished last in the NFC South five straight seasons. They haven't won a playoff game since Super Bowl XXXVII in January 2003.

Jaguars

The Jaguars have missed the playoffs in eight straight seasons. They have the second-worst record in the NFL during that span at 39-89. They have one playoff win since their 62-7 win over the Dolphins on Jan. 15, 2000. The Jaguars' current quarterback is Blake Bortles, who led UCF to a 12-1 record in 2013 and a Fiesta Bowl victory.

State of the Power 5 Teams

Florida State is 84-24 over the last nine seasons, the fourth-best record among Power 5 schools. The Seminoles are 6-2 in bowl games. They won the 2013 national championship, and current Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston won a Heisman Trophy.

Rival Florida is 73-32 over the same span, 13th among Power 5 schools, including 5-2 in bowl games. The Gators won the 2008 national championship. Miami is 59-43 and has finished .500 or better each season.

Also, UCF (59-44, .573), South Florida (46-54, .460) and Florida International (36-62, .367) have better records than the Buccaneers and Jaguars since 2008. Florida Atlantic won the 2008 Motor City Bowl, and UCF won a Fiesta Bowl in that span.
