Welcome to ESPN India's daily blog, where we aim to bring you all the news from the dynamic world of Indian sports: from the wide variety of Olympic sports to franchise leagues.

May has plenty of sporting action taking place - which you can find listed out in ESPN India's sporting calendar.

India's mixed relay team sets national record but still short of Olympic qualification.

India's mixed 4x400 relay team set a national record while winning the gold medal at the inaugural edition of Asian Relay Championships in Bangkok on Monday, but missed the target of entering the Paris Olympics qualification bracket.

The quartet of Muhammed Ajmal, Jyothika Sri Dandi, Amoj Jacob and Subha Venkatesan clocked 3 minutes 14.12 seconds to win the race. The earlier national record was 3:14.34 clocked by the Indian team while winning silver medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games last year.

Monday's timing will put India in the 21st place in the Road to Paris list of World Athletics while the aim was to be either in the 15th or 16th spot, with a time better than 3:13.56. India, thus, is in a difficult position to make the Paris cut, with only a few competitions left until the June 30 deadline.

What's on today?

It's a fairly quiet day today, with plenty of sporting action coming to an end on Sunday. Even the Indian Premier League takes a break, ahead of the qualifier's beginning on Tuesday.

The Malaysia Masters also begins on Tuesday, with plenty of Indians using that as a platform to prepare for the Paris Olympics, save for Thailand Open winners Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty.

There's also the fallout from the Olympic Shooting trials, with the NRAI set to ratify the squad that will be sent to Paris following a selection committee meeting. As things stand, there are some big names missing out, including medal winners and quota winners.

What happened yesterday?

  • Badminton: Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won their second title of 2024 and restored their world no.1 ranking after defeating the Chinese pair of Chen Bo Yang and Liu Yi 21-15, 21-15 in the Thailand Open final.

  • Shooting: The Olympic Selection Trials came to a conclusion in Bhopal. At the end of the final rounds, here are the top two in each event: Sarabjot Singh and Arjun Singh Cheema in men's 10m air pistol; Manu Bhaker and Rhythm Sangwan in women's 10m air pistol; Sandeep Singh and Arjun Babuta in men's 10m air rifle; Elavenil Valarivan and Ramita Jindal in women's 10m air rifle; Sift Kaur Samra and Anjum Moudgil in women's 50m rifle 3-positions. The NRAI will take a final decision on the squad for Paris after a selection committee meeting, which is likely to take place soon.
