Recapping Smash 4 at Day 1 of Evo 2016

Umebura Japan kicks off this weekend in Tokyo with 468 of the best Smash 4 players in attendance. Provided by Nintendo.

More than 2,600 Super Smash Bros. for Wii U entrants have been narrowed down to 32 at the Evolution Championship Series at the Las Vegas Convention Center. As expected, upsets were everywhere, with top players falling flat and some not even making it through to the next round.

Both the winner of Community Effort Orlando 2016, Jason "ANTi" Bates, and runner-up Julian "Zinoto" Carrington have been eliminated from competition. ANTi fell to two Southern Florida players, Taylor "Xaltis" Rose and Austin "Dath" Brown. Zinoto fell to Maximillian "Doom" Krchmar, before being eliminated by Eric "Tyrant" Legesse.

But the pinnacle of the night was after Gonzalo "ZeRo" Barrios was sent to the loser's bracket by Eric "Mr. E" Weber after ZeRo claimed that Mr. E refused to play on any setup that was not streamed. This delayed their Round 2 pool by two hours, causing both players to play past midnight. Following the match, which ZeRo lost, both players took to Twitter, with ZeRo venting his complaints.

Top players Larry "Larry Lurr" Holland, Nairoby "Nairo" Quezada, Elliot "Ally" Bastien Carroza-Oyarce, Samuel "Dabuz" Buzby, James "VoiD" Makekau-Tyson and Vincent "Vinnie" Cannino all made it to the winner's side of the top 32, not dropping a single set along the way.
