Apex Legends set an opening-month launch record for free-to-play games with an estimated $92 million in revenue from in-game spending across all platforms in February, according to SuperData.
The Nielsen company also reported $8.2 billion spent on digital games across all console, PC and mobile platforms during the month, a two percent rise from the same month last year.
Apex Legends ranked fourth in console revenue and sixth in PC among all titles. Fortnite ranked second in console and fifth in PC, again generating more than $300 million in a single month.
Meanwhile, NBA2K19 in-game spending was up 42 percent.
Apex Legends was a surprise release on Feb. 4, with Respawn Entertainment officially unveiling the game only 15 minutes before it went live. However, the company's gamble on reportedly paying Tyler "Ninja" Blevins and Michael "shroud" Grzesiek $1 million each for their sponsored streams and social posts appears to have paid off.
Respawn reported more than 10 million players within the first three days of launch and more than 50 million after the first month.
Apex Legends is free to play but has revenue streams via the game's virtual coin currency, which allows players to purchase Apex Packs and add new cosmetic items. Legends Mirage and Caustic were also behind a paywall for those who wanted to add them quickly rather than earn enough points to acquire them, and the game's Season 1 battle pass was released Tuesday with a new character, Octane, who is also available for purchase.
