Clutch Gaming lose, Team Liquid win on the opening day of the League of Legends World Championship group stage

North American teams got off to a mixed start Saturday at the League of Legends World Championship group stage with Clutch Gaming losing to Royal Never Give up and Team Liquid topping a young South Korean Damwon Gaming.

The six-game slate kicked off with perennial world champions T1 defeating Europe's Fnatic.

Sixteen teams, divided into four groups, are participating in the group stage, which features a double round-robin format and single-game matchups. The top two teams from each group after eight days of play will advance to the knockout stage, where matches are best of five.

In other action Saturday, Invictus Gaming topped ahq e-Sports Club; J Team beat FunPlus Phoenix and Splyce prevailed over GAM Esports.
