As the League of Legends World Championship final wrapped up Sunday in Paris, Riot Games announced it will host the next worlds final at Shanghai Stadium in China.
The world championship was last in China in 2017, with the final between SK Telecom T1 and Samsung Galaxy at the Beijing National Stadium in Beijing. The semifinals took place in Shanghai that year at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center. There, SKT took out Chinese team Royal Never Give Up, and Samsung Galaxy eliminated another Chinese hopeful in Team WE.
The country's fortunes have reversed since then. China's Invictus Gaming won the 2018 world championship with a 3-0 sweep of Europe's Fnatic. And Sunday, FunPlus Phoenix, China's summer split champion, swept G2 Esports in front of a hometown crowd in Paris to once again bring the Summoner's Cup back to China.
Shanghai is the headquarters of the League of Legends Pro League, China's premier domestic league.
