Activision-Blizzard unveiled Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's battle royale mode, Warzone, on Monday and announced the free-to-play mode it would release Tuesday.

A trailer officially revealing details of the game's take on the popular genre showcased 150-player lobbies with the similar drop-in, loot and shoot mechanics of other battle royale titles. Along with the traditional battle royale mode, Warzone will feature a second game type, Plunder.

Plunder, as the name suggests, is a loot-collection-focused version of the battle royale, where accumulation of cash and completing "contracts" to earn more money is paramount, according to a statement from Activision.

"Warzone takes place in Verdansk, an expansive city with multiple named zones and well over 300 points of interest," the developer said in a statement. "Each zone features distinct landmarks like the Gorengard Lumber Yard or the Gora Dam; the zones take place across different environment types like cities and rural areas for unique engagements. Change up your drop location in each match to get a better lay of the land and take advantage of what Verdansk has to offer."

Activision also revealed a new take on respawning in a battle royale: the Gulag. After being eliminated, the developer announced, players will be transported to a prison-like location where they will fight one-on-one against another player for the chance to be redeployed.

"Win in the Gulag and earn redeployment back into Verdansk," the announcement statement said. "Lose and hope that your squad completes Contracts and earns enough in-match Cash to redeploy you."

That contract system is another new wrinkle to the battle royale and similar Plunder mode. These "objective-oriented tasks" will allow players to earn additional rewards, including cash and additional benefits. Activision gave examples such as scavenging missions where players have to open a certain amount of supply boxes and a Domination-style objective where players have to secure and hold a particular point on the map.

Footage from Activision-Blizzard appears to show a map focused on verticality and the use of vehicles including ATVs, SUVs, trucks and helicopters as well as a wide array of weaponry that matches with what's available in Modern Warfare.
