Stuck Inside With: Marvel's Avengers

Our first impressions of Marvel's Avengers left us wanting more. Provided by Square Enix

THUNK.

TING.

TANG.

Look, it will never get old. The sound of Captain America's shield in Marvel's Avengers ricocheting off the skulls of enemies is nearly as satisfying as when I recalled Kratos' axe in the 2018 God of War.

Another big highlight? That amazing front kick (called Torpedo Kick in the game) that yeets small enemies across the floor is pulled exactly from the opening boat scene of Captain America: Winter Soldier. And that's amazing.

I didn't play the beta, but beta be damned. I charged right into multiplayer and tore through the tutorial because I wanted, no, NEEDED to know: Will this replace the foul taste of that other third-person looter, Anthem, while also scratching the itch of the depth of Destiny 2?

My first three hours say yes, you should assemble your friends.

Look, that's not a ton of play time. I've barely scratched the surface, and I've only played Captain America. I haven't even looked at the story yet.

But there's a strong foundation here that looks to take full advantage of the games as a service model. We already have leaks that predict over a dozen new characters joining (with some possibly being similar to others), and I'm sure there will be massive raid-type missions later, more cosmetics, gear, and more.

So here's my wish list for the next year for Marvel's Avengers.

X-Men

Nightcrawler and Psylocke have always been my favorite heroes, so to bring them, and other X-Men, into the game would be a no-brainer. Creative director Shaun Escayg said in an interview with PlayStationTrophies: "It [the possibilities] extends to all of the 80-year history, and the process of choosing these characters is 'can we ground it in this world and can we make a real argument to Marvel that this character belongs here?' -- this character will move our story forward or take us into new stories."

How that reads to me is yeah, we'll see X-Men eventually.

More costume customization

The costumes so far run a pretty wide gamut of "meh" to "that's pretty slick." A slight bummer is when you get new gear, your character doesn't update their look (like Destiny), just their stats (like Anthem).

To circumvent this, why not allow us to mix and match pieces from unlocked costumes? That detail would help to make the Captain America I'm playing a little more "mine."

Additionally, there have been multiple versions of the weapons used by the heroes across the comics. It'd be a treat to be able to equip a different style Cap shield from a specific movie or comic run.

Some form of PvP or PvEvP

One of my favorite modes in Destiny 2 was Gambit, a hybrid player vs. enemy and player vs. player experience. It was essentially a race to defeat enemies and bank points in your own arena with the occasional intruder (a single opposing player) jumping to your side to disrupt your flow.

Adopting that form of gameplay could be an immensely popular way to add a dash of flavor outside of PvE missions for Avengers.

Could a straight PvP mode work? Perhaps a Capture the Flag gametype? Maybe, and I wouldn't be afraid to experiment with that if I were the dev team.
