The Premier League isn't quite finished with this week's action as we've still got Wolves versus Manchester United to come. However, every Monday I'm going to take a look back at the weekend's fixtures in order to deliver five lessons I've learned, from a fantasy perspective. With that in mind, away we go!
Oh, Dani boy
Dani Ceballos got the assist on both of Arsenal's goals (scored by Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang) in the team's 2-1 victory over Burnley. Yet, that's not all Ceballos did. He also took three shots, had three chances created and had a team-high 63 passes completed. This was Ceballos' first start for Arsenal, after arriving on loan from Real Madrid. He's also only 23 years old, so there's plenty of room for improvement. That said, I wouldn't get too excited about Arsenal as a team, despite their being one of only two sides who have won both of their first two games: Liverpool is the other, although Manchester United could make it three. Burnley actually outshot Arsenal 18-15 -- despite only having 32.8% possession -- and beat them on xG (expected goals) 1.80-1.17. By the way, Ashley Barnes scored Burnley's goal, following up his brace from the week before. He's off to a great start, too.
Shooting stars
Aston Villa is one of four teams yet to have put a point on the board, along with Newcastle, Southampton and Watford. On the positive side, Villa took 22 shots in their 2-1 loss to Bournemouth (the second-highest Matchweek 2 total, behind only Manchester City). They also beat Bournemouth on xG, 2.39-1.75. John McGinn, who scored Villa's goal against Tottenham the week before, did not score again on Saturday, However, he did take a team-high six shots. McGinn is a player to keep an eye on. As for Bournemouth, they've been relatively disappointing so far, despite picking up four points. Callum Wilson, coming off a 14-goal season, has yet to score and has taken only one shot in each of his first two games. Ryan Fraser, after finishing second in the league in assists (14) and third in chances created (93), has no goals or assists and just three chances created thus far.
Bright and early
Brighton is also on four points, following up their 3-0 victory over Watford with a 1-1 draw against West Ham. Still, that scoreline doesn't tell the full story. Brighton took 16 shots, twice as many as West Ham, and beat them handily on xG, 2.57-0.87. Leandro Trossard scored Brighton's goal, in his first game after joining the club from Genk in Belgium. The 24-year-old attacker also took a team-high four shots, and nearly had a brace. (He scored another goal that was ruled out by VAR for offside.) Trossard had 14 goals and seven assists for Genk last season, and he's certainly off to a promising start in the Premier League, as is Brighton as a whole under new manager Graham Potter.
Seventh heaven
Teemu Pukki led all players in Matchweek 2 with seven shots and he also notched a hat trick in Norwich City's 3-1 victory over Newcastle. Pukki had also scored Norwich's goal in their 4-1 loss to Liverpool the week before. Pukki led the Championship with 29 goals in 43 games last season, and the 29-year-old center forward from Finland looks legit at the Premier League level as well. Two of Norwich's next three games are against Chelsea and Manchester City, which is tough. After that, though, their next four games are against Burnley, Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Bournemouth. It was a completely bad day for Newcastle, with only 37.0% possession and getting outshot 15-12, while losing handily on xG, 2.08-0.98.
Numbers can lie
If ever you needed underlying stats to tell the true story of a game, a prime example is Manchester City's 2-2 draw with Tottenham. Man City outshot Tottenham 30-3, and whipped them on xG to the tune of 3.47-0.12. Tottenham scored two goals on their only two shots on target in the match -- which was extremely unfortunate for those of us with Ederson as our fantasy goalkeeper this week. Raheem Sterling scored his fourth goal of the season, tying him with Pukki for the early lead in the Golden Boot race. However, the player to get most excited about from this game was Kevin De Bruyne. De Bruyne got the assist on both of Man City's goals, took four shots, and had nine chances created -- three more than any other player in the league this weekend. After an injury-marred 2018-19 season, it looks like the real KDB is back: the one who had eight goals and a league-leading 16 assists and 106 chances created in 2017-18.
