Indian women win first Asian Champions Trophy title

Hockey India

The Indian hockey team registered a 2-1 victory over China to claim the women's Asian Champions Trophy title in Singapore on Saturday. This is the first time that India have won the continental tournament. They had previously faced Japan in the final of the 2013 edition of the tournament where they had lost to the hosts.

Goals from Deep Grace Ekka (13th minute) and Deepika Thakur (60th minute) helped India surmount the challenge from China, who rallied from a goal behind through a strike by Zhong Mengling (44th minute) in the title clash of the fourth edition of tournament.

The welcome result for the Indian women's team comes days after the men beat Pakistan to reclaim the Asian Champions Trophy in Kuantan, Malaysia. India had finished third in the inaugural edition in 2010.
