Mexico Hot List: Carlos Fierro, Jesse Gonzalez pushing for Gold Cup spots

With an eye toward Mexico's participation in the upcoming Confederations Cup and Gold Cup, many of the country's most noteworthy names have a new opportunity to shine for their clubs.

Here, we take a look at some of the recent best and worst performances from the players chasing a place in Juan Carlos Osorio's national team rosters this summer.

Warming Up

Carlos Fierro, MF, Chivas (Mexico)

Why he's here: Eager to impress in his second straight start, Fierro stole headlines with his head-turning performance for Chivas on Saturday. In the dramatic 3-2 victory over Puebla, the winger provided an assist and the game-winning goal.

What this means: Although the 22-year-old still needs to accumulate more regular Liga MX minutes, against Puebla Fierro flaunted talents that could eventually earn him a call-up for the Gold Cup.

Jesse Gonzalez, GK, FC Dallas (United States)

Why he's here: On Saturday, Gonzalez was crucial for Dallas in a 2-0 win over Minnesota United. Following his five saves in net, the 21-year-old was selected to MLS' team of the week. Gonzalez has yet to allow a goal in his two starts this season.

What this means: Like Fierro, Gonzalez might be able to land a surprise place in the Gold Cup with more regular appearances for his club. That said, other up-and-coming goalkeepers, such as Gibran Lajud and Hugo Gonzalez, will provide plenty of competition.

Andres Guardado, MF, PSV Eindhoven (Netherlands)

Why he's here: What more could be asked of Guardado? Over the weekend, the midfielder secured a goal and three assists in a 5-0 victory for PSV Eindhoven against Willem II.

What this means: After some injury worries, the national team player seems to be back to full health. A fit Guardado is also a very good sign for an El Tri side that will need to utilize him during the Confederations Cup and upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Elias Hernandez, MF, Leon (Mexico)

Why he's here: Hernandez has become a catalyst in the attack for Leon. One week after scoring the game-winner against Tigres, the winger responded with two goals and an assist in Saturday's 4-0 win over Veracruz.

What this means: A return to the national team appears inevitable. In spite of potentially not making the cut for the Confederations Cup, Hernandez is one of the leading candidates for a starting position in the Gold Cup.

Cooling Down

Alejandro Palacios, GK, Pumas (Mexico)

Why he's here: Palacios has lost his place in net for Pumas. On Sunday, the goalkeeper was left on the bench in the 1-0 loss to Toluca. His replacement, Alfredo Saldivar, has been given the start in Pumas' past four matches.

What this means: Last week, the 36-year-old refuted the rumors surrounding a possible retirement. Unfortunately for Palacios, a spot in the Gold Cup appears to be out of the question until he regains a key role for Pumas.

Jose Juan Vazquez, MF, Chivas (Mexico)

Why he's here: Right when Vazquez was beginning to recover his old form, the center-midfielder once again earned another suspension. In the second half of the win over Puebla, the 29-year-old was shown a second yellow for a handball, which is now his second red of the campaign.

What this means: Credit should be given to Vazquez for stepping up this year, but another suspension will not do much to get Osorio's attention. The former Leon player will need to make an immediate impact for Chivas upon his return.

Miguel Layun, DF, Porto (Portugal)

Why he's here: Over the weekend, Layun was left off the game-day roster for Porto's 3-0 victory against Belenenses. The match marked the second time in a row that the defender couldn't earn at least a spot on the bench.

What this means: With no injury reports for Layun, his absence from Porto's games is worrisome. Despite this lack of minutes, the high-pressing left-back should still have no trouble earning a place in the Confederations Cup roster.

Hirving Lozano, MF, Pachuca (Mexico)

Why he's here: During Sunday's 1-0 loss to Santos Laguna, Lozano was shown a direct red after an aggressive action toward Diego de Buen in the 66th minute. Although the promising youngster is the most-fouled player this season, Lozano is also one of the league leaders when it comes to bookings and fouls of his own.

What this means: In order for the 21-year-old to become the next great player for Mexico, he will need to avoid moments like the one seen against Santos. Luckily for the winger, red or not, he is far too talented to miss out on the Confederations Cup roster this summer.
