Antoine Griezmann bags brace as Atletico cruise past Celta Vigo
Atletico Madrid picked up their first win of the La Liga season at Celta Vigo.
Coach Diego Simeone had spoken of his frustration at his side's somewhat slow start to the campaign, drawing both of their games prior to this one.
After a goalless first half at the Estadio de Balaidos it looked as though that record may continue, but second-half goals from Koke and Angel Correa, and a brace from Antoine Griezmann, got the job done in a 4-0 rout.
The home side came into the game without a point but did not start in that way, Jonny taking aim with a shot that was well blocked.
Josep Sene also went close after good work from Iago Aspas, while at the other end Griezmann drew a save from Jan Oblak in the Celta goal.
Atleti were having joy with balls played into the box and Diego Godin was just off target after being picked out by a Gabi corner.
Sene had another effort repelled and Theo Bongonda was off target and Celta went to the break feeling as though they should have been ahead.
But if Atleti had any nervous tension it was soon removed in the second half.
First, Griezmann had a left-footed shot which was closed down and then Godin gave Celta a scare from a corner. The opener duly followed 53 minutes in.
Griezmann, so often the scorer, was the provider, swinging in a brilliant cross from the right. Koke arrived right on cue and took the ball on the half volley, 10 yards out, giving the flat-footed Oblak little chance. In fact, all the keeper could do was rock back with the momentum of the shot.
One became two 20 minutes later.
This time Griezmann was the scorer, opening his account for the season after a stellar European Championship. Again it was from a cross, this time from Saul, the forward getting to the ball in front of Jonny and clipping a deft header into the top left-hand corner.
Any resolve Celta had was now over and with nine minutes left, Griezmann added a second.
Juanfran took the role of creator this time, crossing from the right once more, and having not learned their lesson, the Celta defenders watched as Griezmann came through the middle of them to plant a second header beyond Oblak.
Celta were well and truly beaten now and with a minute left on the clock, Angel Correa added a fourth which highlighted the defensive frailties that besieged the home side all afternoon.
They were again bust open on their left, with Koke's cross a scuff that was allowed to scrape its way to the back post where Correa was able to finish from the tightest of angles under a disappointed Oblak.
