Kylian Mbappe nets first hat trick with Real Madrid
Kylian Mbappe scores three goals to lead Real Madrid to a comfortable win over Real Valladolid.
Kylian Mbappé scored his first Real Madrid hat trick in a 3-0 win against bottom-club Real Valladolid on Saturday, a result that sees Los Blancos go four points clear at the top of the LaLiga standings.
The France captain opened the scoring in the 30th minute following a sharp one-two with Jude Bellingham that finished with an emphatic right-footed strike past Karl Hein in the Valladolid net.
For his second, Mbappé combined well with Rodrygo after a lightning counter-attack in the 57th minute, collecting the ball on the left-hand side of the penalty box and slotting past the goalkeeper.
Madrid controlled much of the remainder of the game though it looked like Mbappé would go without the match ball at the final whistle. However, in stoppage time, the referee judged that Mario Martín's slide tackle on Bellingham was worthy of a penalty kick (and indeed a red card) after going to the pitchside VAR monitor, and the 26-year-old summer signing duly scored again to wrap up the contest.
Madrid's win extends their lead atop the table after Atlético Madrid were held to a 1-1 draw by Villarreal. Barcelona host Valencia on Sunday but would remain seven points behind their Clásico rivals with a win.
"Happy for the hat trick but more for the win, I say it every week but it was important to win today after Atletico's draw," Mbappé told Real Madrid TV.
"We had to play well, we scored the first goal in a collective action. In the second half we could have played better, but we scored the second, managed well and scored the third."
It was not the most inspired performance by Carlo Ancelotti's team who struggled to create many scoring opportunities despite controlling the action with almost 70% of ball possession, finishing the game with only four shots on target.
Missing Vinícius due to suspension after his red card against Valencia, Real once again relied on Mbappé to score the goals on a cold night.
After a slow start in the Spanish capital, the former Paris Saint-Germain player has found his groove in the last two months, scoring 15 LaLiga goals and 21 overall.
Following a brace he netted last week against Las Palmas and Saturday's hat trick, Mbappé now stands second in the LaLiga scoring charts only one goal behind Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski.
