Denis Suarez insists he is happy at Villarreal but knows that a return to Barcelona this summer is possible.
Suarez who spent the 2014-15 season on loan at Sevilla from Barcelona, signed a four-year contract with Villarreal last summer and has made 21 La Liga starts with the club.
Catalan-based newspaper El Mundo Deportivo reported on Monday that Suarez will return to Barca this summer and described the player as a must-sign for the team since his buy-back option is only €3 million.
When asked about Barca's reported interest, Suarez told El Pais newspaper: "I have not spoken with Barca, perhaps they have spoken with my agent, I don't know.
"You never know, from here until the end of the season a lot of things can happen."
Suarez said he wouldn't be surprised if Barca did want him back.
"The possibility of returning to Barca is there and it's very difficult to say no to that," the 22-year-old midfielder said. "I've always wanted to play for Barca."
Barca targeted the player during the winter transfer market but Villarreal refused to let him go, according to the player.
Suarez said: "[Villarreal coach] Marcelino told me that he would not consider the possibility of letting me go as I was a very important and crucial player for him.
"I understood. I would have done the same thing had I been in his shoes.
"The [Villarreal] club president Fernando Roig then told me that they would not let me leave and I said that it wasn't a problem, that my focus was here.
"I took the decision to come here, to fight until the end and to try to help the team qualify for the Champions League and hopefully we can reach the Europa League final.
"When you take a decision, you have to stand by it until the end. I've never regretted anything that I have done so far in my career."
Suarez moved to Barca from Manchester City in the summer of 2013 in a €1.5m deal. He has made the most of his opportunities at El Madrigal stadium.
He has scored three goals and set up four more to help Villarreal remain fourth in the standings.
Moreover, he has scored one and provided six assists in 10 games in continental competition for Villarreal, who will take on Sparta Prague in the quarterfinals of the Europa League.
"I'm delighted here," Suarez said. "Marcelino was looking forward to me coming here and he insisted on having me a lot.
"He has kept his word with me and vice versa. The style of play of Villarreal is better suited than that of Sevilla for me."
