New Sunderland signing Jack Rodwell has warned young English players not to derail their careers by signing for Manchester City.
Rodwell, 23, signed a five-year contract at the Stadium of Light this summer for fee of 10 million pounds after a frustrating two years at the Etihad Stadium. He had joined from Everton for 12 million pounds in 2012 at the age of 21 but found chances in the first team hard to come by when fit.

Asked to give his advice to young players wanted by City, Rodwell said in the Daily Mirror: "I would probably say don't sign now, I'd say get as much football as you can. The first thing I'd ask is, 'how good are you?' You just never know -- you could go there, do really well and be winning league titles and everything.
"But just because you're English and young it doesn't mean you're not going to play for Manchester City. I would just say weigh up your options and ask yourself if you want to be playing regularly."
