United States national team and Atlas defender Greg Garza will undergo hip surgery and be sidelined up to five months during his recovery, according to his club team's doctor.
The surgery ensures that Garza will not be able to play for the U.S. in the CONCACAF Cup match versus Mexico on Oct. 10. He was named in Jurgen Klinsmann's provisional 35-man squad for the match.
Garza played one match for the U.S. in the 2015 Gold Cup and was sent home ahead of the knockout rounds. He was likely a long shot to make the final 23-man roster for the Mexico match.
The 24-year-old joined Atlas on loan from Tijuana this summer and has made three appearances for the Liga MX side.
Fellow U.S. defenders Fabian Johnson and Brad Evans are also dealing with injuries ahead of the Oct. 10 Confederations Cup play-in game. Those two are trying to regain fitness in time for the game, while Timothy Chandler has been ruled out.
