Liga MX stars aren't the only Mexican players making headlines recently; Andres Guardado is fresh off winning the Eredivisie curtain opener, the Johan Cruyff Shield, where he helped PSV to a 1-0 win over Feyenoord Rotterdam.
It's only a matter of time until Javier Hernandez, Miguel Layun and Guillermo Ochoa gain more of our attention as their respective seasons get underway later this month. But for now, let's take a look back at some of the best and worst performances from Mexicans in Liga MX and abroad:
Warming Up
Andres Guardado, MF, PSV Eindhoven
Why he's here: Guardado has started his 2016-2017 season in Europe with a splash, playing a vital role in PSV's 1-0 Dutch Super Cup win over Feyenoord on Sunday.
What this means: Guardado, 29, has hit the ground running and will be keen to defend his club's league title from last season. Another good tournament in Europe can only lead to more positive developments for the midfielder, who is also one of the most important figures on the Mexico national team.
Alejandro Palacios, GK, Pumas
Why he's here: In the first three weeks of the Apertura, Palacios has looked the most impressive goalkeeper. The 35-year-old has yet to concede a goal in three matches and was crucial for the Mexico City side during Sunday's 1-0 win over Leon, most noticeably blocking a penalty shot from German Cano in the 30th minute.
What this means: If Palacios maintains this form, he will be making a case for a return to the Mexico national team. With a friendly set against New Zealand on Oct. 8th, El Tri manager Juan Carlos Osorio might consider giving Pumas' star player a chance.
Raul Lopez, DF, Pachuca
Why he's here: Lopez has had no trouble assimilating to life at Pachuca. He's developing into a key player for Los Tuzos at right-back; during Saturday's 1-0 win against Necaxa, he was near-perfect with his long passes and interceptions for the home side.
What this means: Although Lopez, 23, won't have an opportunity to shine for Mexico during the Olympics, he will surely continue to garner minutes with the current Liga MX champion. As for the national team, it's only a matter of time before the youngster starts to challenge Paul Aguilar for the starting role at right-back.
Cooling Down
Jose Juan Vazquez, MF, Chivas
Why he's here: The big signing from Leon has yet to reach Chivas' expectations. During last Friday's 4-0 loss to Club Tijuana, Vazquez failed to take control of the midfield and did little to halt runs from players like Gabriel Hauche and Dayro Moreno.
What this means: Was 2014 the peak of the midfielder's career? After looking like a starter for El Tri a couple of years ago, the 28-year-old is now struggling to make an impact in the domestic league. That said, Vazquez still has plenty of time to redeem himself in the Apertura.
Eduardo Herrera, FW, Pumas
Why he's here: While Palacios has dominated his area in net, Herrera has continued to look quiet and reserved in the attack for Pumas. During Sunday's 1-0 win over Leon, the out-and-out striker only managed to create one shot. On top of this, his strike against Los Panzas Verdes is the only one he's taken in three starts so far.
What this means: Herrera is in desperate need of a goal. With strikers like Javier Hernandez, Oribe Peralta, Raul Jimenez and various others ahead of him, he will quickly need to turn his season around if he wishes to hold onto his tenuous relevance in the national team fold.
Elias Hernandez, MF, Leon
Why he's here: Although Hernandez isn't playing terribly, he has had a difficult time recreating the magic we saw during the 2016 Clausura. Hernandez, 28, who some consider to be one of the more underrated players in the league, couldn't find a way to break Pumas down during Sunday's match.
What this means: Like Vazquez and to a lesser extent Herrera, Hernandez is still a prime candidate to fight for a role in Mexico's roster. However, if he continues to amass average performances, the midfielder won't be doing much to garner interest from Osorio in the future.
